Introducing the First Floor Restaurant

20-03-2023 - 30-06-2023

A New Direction

We are excited to announce a new direction for German Gymnasium, with the relaunch of our first floor Restaurant. Our new Executive Chef, Alexander Thiel (previously of Barrafina and Beaufort), has created a sophisticated, seasonal menu for our upstairs Restaurant, inspired by the German home-cooked dishes he grew up with. Thiel’s mission is to challenge preconceptions of German cuisine by bringing a new and refined take on the country’s cooking to the London food scene.

The new concept represents a new era for German Gymnasium, which opened in 2015 within our iconic Grade-II listed historical building. While the first-floor Restaurant is introducing a sophisticated, seasonal menu that explores German-speaking Europe, the ground floor Grand Café will continue to serve German and Mittel-European classics from breakfast to dinner.

With a dedicated kitchen, exceptional service and accompanying Meister Bar (a destination in it’s own right), you can expect an elevated experience the moment you walk up one of our grandiose staircases.

Explore Authentic German Cuisine

The Restaurant menu has been thoughtfully designed by our Executive Chef, Alexander Thiel, drawing on his experiences as a restauranteur in Berlin to deliver a unique experience for London’s foodies. The menu aims to introduce lesser known dishes from around German-speaking Europe, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Choose from a range of authentic German-style starters like the Krabben Cocktail, or Flädlesuppe (Clear Beef Bone Broth), as you overlook the bustling Grand Café or gaze out the window at the iconic St Pancras Station.
Enjoy roasted meats carved at your table, like our Rehrücken Baden Baden (Roast Roe Deer Saddle) or the Ente aus dem Rohrwith (Whole Roasted Duck).
Discover regional specialties, originating from different parts of Germany and it’s neighbours, like the Gefüllte Paprikaschote mit Letscho (Roasted Stuffed Bell Pepper) or the Forelle mit Mandlebutter (Pan Fried Whole River Trout).
Finish off with the best desserts Germany has to offer like Kaiserchmarrn, Quark & Apricot Strudel, or the Windbeutel.
